We are often hearing on the news of how, yet again, a child has been attacked by a family pet dog.  Sadly the press often focus on the breed of the dog and as a result people become wary of certain dog types, however more often than not the cause is the way that humans interact with their canine companions.  We should instead be focussing on the way we interact with our dogs rather than their breed.  Any dog, put in a threatening situation, can bite.

As the nights draw in, and there is an autumnal chill in the air, it’s made me realise that Halloween, Fireworks night and Christmas are rapidly approaching us!

When they were younger one of my daughters was always afraid of people dressing up, particularly at this time of year with all the scary costumes around!   She was too young to understand that it was just a normal person wearing a costume.  So, if our children don’t understand what’s going on, how must our dogs feel?

I was speaking to a lovely lady recently who has an elderly Collie Cross, Betsy, who she rehomed a few years ago from a local Rescue.  She had taken on this dog knowing that it had behavioural problems but had been told that this gorgeous girl was ‘untrainable’.

The main problems Betsy was displaying - poor recall, dog aggression and excessive barking - resonated with me, as we too had previously had all these issues with Harvey and in spite of using various different training techniques, had been told that he was ‘untrainable’.
